Mitsubishi is known as a manufacturer of capable off-road vehicles, with the Shogun being the brand's stalwart 4x4. More recently these off-roaders have been joined by softer, more civilised versions, better adapted to the road, and this has now culminated in 'soft-roaders' becoming viable everyday family transport with little or no compromise around manners and drivability that blight the harder core SUVs.
Given that in recent times Mitsubishi has struggled to make good road cars, the market trends have begun to play to some of the company's core strengths and the new ASX crossover gives the manufacturer a chance to leverage those against many rivals who are treading an unknown path. The ASX bridges the gap between the Lancer and the Outlander and Shogun models.
